Penhydd @ Afan
Anyone have any news about when it's going to reopen -and in what format?
My memory is a bit hazy, but I recall it closed about a year ago, for about a year so I was expecting to be some news about it reopening now.
Most of the links to it on MB Wales have been removed and I know they found some tree fugus stuff that was a big worry for them.
I also read somewhere that the forresting work was likely to pretty much destroy the trail meaning it would need rebuilding and maybe even downgrading to a 'blue' trail to fit in with the expansion plans.

sorry i can't be any more help than that0 -

just returned from weekend @ Afan. Yeah its still closed and nobody seemed to know when it would be open. Skyline has a few closures as well due to the tree fungus. We did ride virtually all the Skyline though as we met some security up there and he said most of it can be ridden as it was a sunday so nobody was working on it. There were 2 sections we had to carry bikes over felled trees.
We did head over to Brechfa (40mins away) which not sure if u have ridden? We hadnt and went on the Black Raven run and it was fantastic. Lung busting near vertical climbs equally steep downhills with technical berms, 4ft table tops and sweet flowing single track. Its like XC/trail/DH all in one ride'..all the bad cats in the bad hats..'0 -
I did the wall on Sunday and spoke to the car park guys at the miners musuem.
They said that the contractors doing the work had to be out/off by the end of May I think and then they'd spend the summer rebuilding as they've made a mess of the trails
Looking at September from what I was told.Orange P7 2007

Dam, sounds like it's going to be a full rebuild then. Hope they manage to recover a lot of it. The sections from Sidewinder down with the little stone 'postman pat' style bridges are great fun.
The new trail work attached to the 'Mountain Biking Centre of Excellence project' is meant to be starting late summer this year so it'll probably tie in with that. If we don't get at least 1 new red/black trail built at every centre in South Wales for £6m we've been royaly robbed.0 -
Sorry to say it but we used Penydd as an escape for a day as it is like a Rose wine. Meaning, it is wine, but y'know...it's a friendly wine that won't kill you, give you a hang over or make you regret having too much.
As trails go: Penyhdd was/is a Red with a hint of Blue. Or more preciseley, it is Blue with a hint of Red in my opinion. It has some fine views and is not gigamiles from our base. Since they closed the trail, Wales hasn't had much in the way from me in terms of tourist income. \o/
I've been scouring the websites for news and considering it must have some logistical process driving these projects - any detailed news is pretty much in the dark ages. Shame, but their choice I guess.
Old News: Forestry Commission Wales Mountain Bike Ranger Carl Denham said, “Although this trail will be closed for a year or so, it gives us a great opportunity to refresh the route, which was created ten years ago by local mountain bike club Singletrack Mind.

I just save my pennies for the bridge and go to Cannock Chase instead. Nothing wrong with the "Follow the Monkey" trail.
You don't need to point out the full name of the trails.0
