When replacing brake cables is it best to replace the outer casing aswell, its v brakes I'm using and the old casing looks ok. Do you normally just replace both... Same for heart cables?

The cables wear from the inside out, so it's pretty much impossible to tell what sort of shape they're in visually (unless you're really really lax with your maintenance). I'd be replacing the outers at the same time unless I had an unusual reason for replacing the inners on their own (e.g. fraying at the cable clamp).

  • Thanks for the quick reply! I tried to do a search but I'm using my phone to post, lol, I must have predictive txt on as I was asking about gear cables aswell... NOT heart cables. I'll replace the outer casing on all cables.. Thanks again.

Generally i put a new inner in, if it feels rough as it goes through then I replace the outer, it rarely seems to need it.
