AFAIK to go smaller than a 15 you need a smaller hub, and go onto a bmx standard in which case 9 is fairly common and we the people made a prototype 4 tooth rear sprocket...

Back on the fixie after a winter layoff (not for weather, but for light); rode to work the other day thinking that I must've really got out of shape during hibernation, only to discover when I arrived at work that the rear brake had been rubbing.

I'm chalking that down to Resistance Training.

Rubbing brakes aside, the thing I love best about riding fixed is the SILENCE.

Yep, the 'riding fixed gives you a better workout because there's no respite' theory only applies if you are the kind of person who doesn't have the mental strength to push yourself without being forced to. You can, of course, pedal slower too. Just because your legs are going round all of the time it doesn't mean your output is any greater.

By all means ride a fixie for fun, but don't kid yourself that you are any more of a man for doing so (statistics show you are actually more likely to wear skinny jeans and grow a patchy lady-beard so the contrary may very well be true).

Riding the roadie the last couple of days seems harder work than the fixed has been. So, drawing from 2 days of experience across a sample of 1 I've concluded that the best workout comes from mixing fixed with geared. For those interested in referring to my sources please see notes on the back of the beer mat.

I finished building a fixie a couple of weeks ago using a frame that was in a mate's back garden for at least 15 years. It would have been cheaper buying a new one, but where is the fun in that?

For FG wheels, I would suggest contacting the guy who built mine (Varno).
FG rear wheel, sprocket (16T), front wheel, tyres, tape and tubes for £175 delivered. Came in 3 days too.

PM me if you want his details.
