inside knee pain & brusing

Hi,

Recently scaled up my training a bit. One long ride at weekend plus about 80 miles commuting in week.

Last sunday after long ride I came home with a small 10p sized bruise on the top of my shin bone on the inside of the knee. I hadn't had any bumps so it was a mystery. Over next few days of commuting, bruise is fading but pain is getting worse. Pain is right on top of shin bone about 30 degrees inside from front of knee. Was very painful this morning.

Anyone got any ideas? The bruise is a worry... :(

cheers. But IT syndrome is the outside of the knee. This is on the inside.

Maybe that's why I'm not a doctor

    see a doctor

if you didn't whack it on something then the bruise may be due to internal bleeding, maybe you tore something, so see a doctor

where i am was freezing last sunday, makes it easier to cause damage if legs are cold and/or you didn't warm up, especialy when pushing hard

oh, and did i mention, see a doctor

maybe you just whacked it on something?

it's easy enough to do without really noticing until later.

I had something very similar a few years ago (I would say that what you have sounds identical, but of course it might not be!).

Just to the side (inside) of the kneecap, just above or on the top edge of the inside part of the tibia? I also had slight visible bruising when it was particularly bad.

In my case it was some small ligament or tendon on the inside of the knee that was being strained when my heel moved too far out during the pedal stroke. I needed to fit cleats/pedals that kept my heel close to the crank by preventing outward float. Also, fitting cleat wedges helped, although the keeping the heel in was the main thing.

The bruising will probably be because you have slightly torn the ligament/tendon. You will need to rest it for a few days to let it recover properly (no cycling..) and then find the source of whatever it is that is causing the strain.

I saw a doctor, but to be honest he wasn't much use. See a bike fit specialist!

    Cheers for the replies everyone.

Few days rest & it's calmed down a little. I tried a commute to work on a mountain bike in the week & got about 100m before my knee started hurting. Walking up & down staris last week wasn't too much fun.

To the last poster - I think you could be right. The bruise is more or less where the medial tendons attach on the shin & the feeling is more or less when some tw@t clobbered me in a footy match about 10 years back. That took 6 weeks to heal propely...

I'll take a look at the cleats - I should have mentioned that I only went clipless this year so am still finding my correct position. I wear the outside edges of heels on my shoes so that could have something to do with it.

definitely get this assessed, early last year i had a knee injury that then just wouldn't recover, tried doctors, rest, pills, etc.

eventually it turned out that i needed some extra arch support and shims, once that was done it was like magic, pretty much instant cure

see a good bike fitter - one able to select and fit whatever footbeds/shims etc.

i kinda had the same problem i had a really painful knee the pain was inside and it was really puffy and if i tried running for more than 200 metres plus it would get really sore. :(

ive rested it for about 2 weeks and its got better so i think like neeb that if u just rest it would eventualy heal i

if not definetly see a doctor!!

    hopes it gets bettr :):)

If it's painful then definitely rest it until you've seen a doctor.

Update regarding the knee. Went to see a physio last night and...

    1) Strained cruciate ligament
    2) strained medial collateral ligament
    3) inflamed & irritated medial meniscus
    4) imbalance in hamstrings
    5) slight mistracking of kneecap
    6) ....flat feet!!!

Be very careful anyone who gets cleated up for the first time & feels fine. I got through 100km and caused this with no sensation of damage until a day or two later when I tried to cycle again.

2-4 weeks rest prescribed, then a Specialized bike fitting to set the bike right.

    Ouch.

It's good news that you've got a diagnosis.

cyclist are infamous for self diagnosis and ignoring pain, myself included!

i had pain in the inside of my knee ... a clicking noise in my knee when straigthing it after sitting down for period of time, and it was a bit sore when walking down stairs.

stretching has made a huge difference...

stretching my hamstrings and doing knee stretches have made huge difference.

however a bit like yourself i will be going for a bike fit to get my position on the bike
    properly assessed.

hopefully a proper bikefit will help

hope your on the mend fast
