Do shifters need to match derailleur in terms of make/model?

I'm thinking yes but thought I'd ask.

For example can I fit Sram XO shifters to a bike that has Shimano SLX drailleur?

SRAM shifters with a number only work with SRAM rear mechs. SRAM shifters with names work with Shimano rear mechs.

SRAM numbers are X9 X7 X5 etc SRAM names are Rocket, Attack etc

    Front mechs are interchangeable though.

And on the rear mech compatability you can also add that 10 speed mechs must be matched with 10 speed shifters of the same brand.

It's all in the FAQs I believe.
