Doesn't look like the peloton have the juice to catch the break.
A bye product of having a load of teams with sprinters who can climb a bit, but not well enough?

    How's Rojas doing?

De Gendt going for the time rather than the stage win. My money's on Voeckler.

Also a result of a race without the main sprinters in - Goss, Haussler, etc normally have to lead out or do their own thing. All the top sprinters are in the Tirreno

Don't worry, he'll be in there. saw him with a helper all the way at the front at the penultimate climb. It's more worrying Haussler is still in there; and Goss, just

Or maybe the peloton can still do it yet... quite exciting, this.
  • Bunch are steaming now. Goss seemed to just about hold on / get back in before the hammer went down.
  • Will be very tight, the time is dropping. Tool ittle too late perhaps?

Hope de Gendt saved enough energy to stay in the peloton!

The winner pulled his out with 15 km to go
  • I'm puzzled why a breakaway with De Gendt in was allowed to get away to start with :?

    Well done the break away

    There you go.
I had Tommy V down to win..............yesterday.
A few teams will be fed up with the one man band that is Tommy de Gendt.

It wasn't great by Paris-Nice standards.

  • It's a sad indictment that you see someone riding like De Gendt
    - and nevermind his team - and immediately think the worst. Or is that just me becoming old and cynical?

I did fear the worst when I saw his team, but I like to believe it's just strong, aggresive riding. Or is that me being young and naive!? But why he was allowed to get away today I don't know. Even so, hats off to him for another gutsy ride.

He gets away today, what difference does it make? He's going to lose it tomorrow anyway. HTC won't have been bothered by Goss losing the jersey - they have bigger fish to fry.

Exactly. Goss wouldn't keep yellow after tomorrow anyway, and it's unlikely De Gendt will either. For the moment he's just an aggressive Voeckler-style rider, no second Johnny H

Is Tommy DG just getting stick because of Vacansoleil being tarred with the Ricco/Mosquera brush? If you look at his palmares, its not one of a doper par excellence. He has proven in previous races that he is happy to go out and be aggressive - its just with Vacansoleil he's getting the chances in bigger races than before.

Wow, Voeckler is amazing. Got to be one of the best value riders. Pure entertainment. Pure panache.

Credit to De Gendt, attacking after 6km . Motivation.

    2 things there.
    1) His own exposure and palmares and he certainly deserves his time in the spotlight for another day and who knows that there could be more to come this week.?
    2) The dumb management decision with Ricco & Mossey has to be overcome if they want their Sponsors Number 1 prize to be achieved in July.
The sponsors are paying out big money to the ASO to do their bit with all the event sponsorship (also noted at Adriatico)

This year they hope it is third time lucky.
I wondered who they were a couple of years ago when they handed trinkets out at the Liege presentation.

IMO it is very refreshing to see a team making a go of it and today I give them (him) 10 out of 10.

I was answering the "why did the other teams let him get away" question, but probably should have quoted it for clarity.

But I agree with you that it's a winning situation for Vacansoleil. Looking at their team for Paris-Nice, they don't really have anyone for the GC, so getting in breakaways, a stage win, two days in yellow, de Gendt making them some new fans - they've had a great race whatever happens in the rest of the stages.
