Will this work ok or should I just go for the Dura Ace chainset that I am not keen on the look of?

Yes. It is only the shifters and rear derailleur that won't mix with shimano.

I believe the Di2 chainrings have been strengthened to cope with the increase lateral load exerted by the servo-operated derailleur. The SRAM units will not have been designed with this in mind.

Several manufacturers are already offering built-up Di2 bikes with non-Dura Ace chainsets, typically either FSA or Shimano Ultegra, presumably with Shimano's blessing.

The only possible issue with SRAM Red is that in its infancy, there were a number of reported failures of the chainrings in traditional "mechaicnal" installations but I believe this was addressed some time back.

Electronic Ultegra is due towards the end of this year. Shimano have recently launched a new "glossy grey" coloured version Ultegra chainset, which is shown on a bike which has electronic shifting - the chainset is the same as the current model, just with added shininess. So either Shimano have been enhancing the strength of the current Ultegra range for the past 2 years in preparation for Ui2 - or the reality is that it doesn't matter too much.

I don't see how the load is any greater with electronic shifting. It may be faster, but it shouldn't put any more strain on the rings. If Shimano are claiming that it sounds like marketing bullcrap.
