As I am changing my chainrings for slightly bigger ones (bottom two) are they specific to 10 speed as I will wait till the rear wear out if that the case.

Just asked the LBS if 9 speed Shimano chainwheels are compatible with 10 speed and the answer was a qualified yes. He had two comments:
1) The setup should work on but he pointed out that a new chain on a badly warn chainring would most likley act up; and
2) He changed his Cannondale to 10 speed last year and he thinks he's wasted his money and time. He said that, in his opinion, the ratios are too close together so you just end up having to change an extra cog to get to whichever gear you need - and I think I sort of see where he's coming from. Even on a 9 (27) speed I seem to have to pull a lot of cable to get to the correct ratio when I transition out of a sticky/hilly secition.
He said if he were to buy a new bike he'd probably buy 10 speed (because many of the 2011 bikes are these days) but he wouldn't upgrade 9 to 10 again.

Valid comment if you stick with an 11-32 or 34 cassette, thus defeating the point of 10 speed. If you go for an 11-36 the gaps are the same as a 9 speed 11-32, just with an extra sprocket.
Chainrings will be fine though.0
