Leaving tow ar mounted rack on car while out for a ride

Morning, very new to this cycling lark but enjoying it a lot ! Anyway, I have an Atera Strada bike rack which locks to my tow ball - my question is this: when I/we are parked up for a ride should I leave it attached to the car or do what I do now and stow it in the boot of my Passat estate? I am thinking that if a thief wants it then he is either going to smash it off the tow bar or smash the windows of the car to get in. Also, from a safety aspect I would only do it if space permitted.
What's the etiquette/safest way to do this please!

i have always left my thule rack on the tow bar. you could also add a chain and lock."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

I use wither tow bar carriers, takes 4 bikes and attaches to and removes from towbar in 2 seconds so stows in back of my scenic.Peds with ipods, natures little speed humps
Banish unwanted fur - immac a squirrel

much easier to remove from the back of a Scenic than locked to a tow-ball."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
