A quick scan of forums here & in USA will reveal the problem with trying to fit a locking Pitlock seat post bolt - these days most clamps don't have parallel surfaces for the bolt ends to rest on (they're mostly recessed or angled or both) & Pitlock don't supply a 30mm clamp.
Well, for anyone googling for an answer to the problem I have one.

Rather embarrassingly, after a week of searching & even speaking to Identiti who have discontinued their compatible clamp, I suddenly remembered the basic Cove QR that actually came with my Handjob frame itself - & it seems to work fine.
It doesn't have recessed bolt surfaces like those on sale at Chainreaction, so if you're in same predicament, it might be worth contacting the guys at Cove.

  • I have also been looking at for a 30mm seatpost clamp suitable to pitlock for my Surly Long Haul Trucker (LHT). I found that Urban Bike Tech has a shimmed version of the 31.8mm pitlock clamp which brings it down to 30mm. You can buy them from here: http://www.urbanbiketech.com/Pitlock-Se ... tclamp.htm
  • Hmmm, I just went to buy a 30mm seatpost clamp from Urban Bike Tech but they quoted me $67.42 to ship a $12.79 30mm clamp to the UK. I sent them an email and they explained that the international shipping calculator has only been set up for express shipping overseas, so it doesn't return any small packet options. They can ship it to the UK via Light Packet International for $7.20. However you do need to get in contact with them first so they can setup a special paypal invoice.

Here were some of the other options I was looking at, the Koga SCHD1 looks like really good deal for £1.94 delivered within the UK!

    Hope Seat Clamp & QR 30.0mm: £19.99

    Koga SCHD1 Seat Clamp 29.8mm: £1.94

    Cove - Seat Clamp QR 30.0mm: £12.95

but why would you want one of these things?

make it a pain to adjust your seat hight.

and if your seatpost and saddle are worth that much just use a Qr and take the whole lot with you when you leave your expensive bike out in the open to be stolen.

Or get down to the police auctions and spend a tenner on a rat bike.

  • I have only adjusted the seatpost height once and that was when I purchased the bike: 1 year and 4000km ago, that's it. If you can use a spanner, you can adjust the saddle height easily.

Taking the saddle off will cause rain to get in and rust the seat tube at the least or the entire frame at worst. A couple of pitlocks cost less than a new frame. I have a well maintained brooks saddle which granted isn't the most expensive saddle in the world but is very appealing to thieves that only need a hex key to take it rather than heavy duty bolt cutters and a car jack to take the bike. Buying a a few pitlocks is still better than buying a new saddle having that stolen, spending 50+ hours breaking it in only to have that one stolen and so on....

I don't have a rat bike as I am using this bike a my sole mode of personal transport to tour from Scotland to Italy and don't fancy dragging a second bike in a tailor for that purpose.
