Canti brake spring problem?

While cleaning my cross/winter bike I hamfistedly did something bad to the rear cantilever brake. I think i pulled/pushed the left arm rather too far in and something 'pinged'. The same arm presses too far inward of where it should be. I've inspected and tinkered with it but find these brakes far trickier than I know I should! They are Avid Shorty 4's. Am i missing something basic to get the arm back where it should be?

    Hi
I have these on a cross bike and setting them up I have pushed them in too hard. It usually results in the spring rod coming off the end of the retaining boss. Unless the spring is broken, just clip it back over the boss and all will be well. In normal use the cable pull is not vigorous enough to displace the spring.

    cheers

Unscrew the arm retainer screw, slip off the brake arm and all should be apparent - the end of the spring locates in a hole by the mounting stud - expect yours has 'popped' out - many frames have 3 positions - make sure it's the same both sides. You'd have to go some to permanently damage a canti return spring.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
