Venture to Road Biking?

I have finally been bitten by the road bike curiosity bug.

My father in law has been MTBing with me over the winter but is an avid road biker.

I am currently looking some bikes but even though I am knowledgeable in MTBing this seems an alien world to me!

I want a road bike that:

I can use for sprints/tri's/distance.
Is in the similar ranks as my Spesh Enduro E150 in the MTB world.

Also I am a small/medium in MTBing terms [5"8]- what does that equate to in road biking terms?

    I'm 5'8" (well, 5' 7.5") and my road bike & CX bike are 54cm/medium frames. There are a few variables -- such as saddle height, crank length, stem length -- which can be used to fit a bike to your body, as your leg length, torso length, arm length etc. all play a part of course; but I propose 54cm as a good place to start.
