At the end of december On-One had what is probably their best offer to date, the Carbon 456 Stick & Bounce Rolling Chassis. Everything in the 1st picture (- rotor, + grips & decals) for £800. Well I couldn't resist and I managed to get my order in before they sold out.

It's now built up, although still a work in progress. Rides very well, stiff & responsive, yet comfortable enough to ride all day.

Here's the spec so far (the rest has been taken from my old bike):

Frame: On-One Carbon 456
Forks: RS Revelation RLT, 15mm maxle, tapered steerer, 140mm
Headset: On-One Smoothie Mixer
Wheels: DT Swiss E2200
Tyres: Schwalbe Nobby Nic Evo 2.25 front, Rocket Ron 2.25 rear
Seatpost: Nukeproof Warhead
Seat clamp: Use
Brakes: Shimano XT M775 with RT79 rotors 203 front, 180 rear

Still need to buy new gears, probably going to go 1x10, handlebars & saddle.

Nice spec and yep great deals were had from On-One at Xmas. That's going to look soo nice built up. What do you think of the raw carbon finish?

Am loving riding mine but not quite finished tweaking yet (stem, pedals, grips)

The 1st phase of my 1x10 setup is complete (no going back now). I've gone for Race Face Respond cranks with a single 38T ring & a Superstar XCR chain guide.

    IMG_0805.jpg

I'll have to avoid the bigger hills for now as I'm still using my old 11-28T cassette. Having said that, I've found it surprisingly easy to ride. Where before I would have been on the middle ring (32T) I can use the same cog at the back with the 38T ring.

For anyone considering this setup on a Carbon 456, the chainstays are quite thick, so I had to adjust the chain line by 2mm to accomadate the 38T chainring. I then had to add a washer chain guide to line that up.
  • Nice work Ed, looking the Dogs Danglies.

    Lovely bike that. Well done

A small point-I dont think the saddle suits the bike if you see what I mean. I reckon it would look better with a thinner saddle like a sdg bel air or a charge spoon.

Nice bike - I had those grips on for one ride and ditched them. Didn't like them at all. Switched them for some Charge Sponge grips with red bits.

The saddle does look a bit chunky. It's actually the only part carried over from my previous build. The only reason I haven't replaced it yet is because I find it really comfortable.

I quite like the look of the WTB Devo saddle & a couple of Specialized's offerings.

Thanks Chilesy, I was hoping someone might reccomend the Devo.

I think the discs are the best bit of the whole build. I'm glad the brake levers have decent modulation, because the brakes are very powerful. I was thinking of getting some Saint callipers, but they would have been a bit too OTT (quite literally).
  • Looks good. Is it a 16" or 18" frame?

Interesting, looks like On-one changed the design of the rear stays/dropouts between yours and mine. Mine has screw through fittings for the dropout bolts. On yours they aren't visible from the outer side. From your orig post, they were both bought around the same time, wonder why the change:

    it's an 18" frame

dc71, good spot, mine has 2 allen key bolts in the same place, but as you say, they don't go all the way through the frame.

Lovely evening for a ride so I thought I'd take a few photos along the way. Gives you all an idea of the kind of terrain I ride & the scenery up in the Malvern hills.
Note the new saddle, WTB Devo.

I really like that. That's a ridiculous price for everything in the first picture. Good to see you didn't go Red mad and just picked a few nice little touches.

Is the crankset 10 speed specific? I wonder why it's worth changing as I have a Shimano XT crankset that I run 10 speed with a single middle chainring, that isn't 10 speed specific either and it all seems to work.

Very nice Ed, seems like 456s are taking off. You got a proper bargain too! I live close to the Malverns too, top place to ride with stunning scenery.

I've made some upgrades over the last few months, so here's an update & some new pictures.
Firstly I got myself a Rockshox Reverb dropper post. Wasn't sure whether it would be worth the expense but the german sites had some good deals so I went for it. I have to say it's superb, I use it all the time & now have much more confidence on descents knowing that the saddle is out of the way.
I needed some slightly wider bars. Went for Spank Oozy Ltd bars, 700mm wide, 5mm rise & some ODI X-treme lock-on grips.
