Hi guys,

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=54355

Relatively quick one hopefully. I have a GT I Drive 5 XCR with a Truvativ Firex 3.1 chainset fitted. I don't know much about chainsets etc and I see that this particular chain tensioner 'Fits up to 40t chainrings' I don't really know what this means. I see from the CRC info that it fits (or fits to?)

BB Mount
ISCG 05 Mount
ISCG Mount

If it does it does fit; which one do I need. Do I need to remove the chainset to fit this?

You may be able to tell from the above that I have no clue; but am willing to learn

Thanks all

  • I don't think your bike has ISCG mounts, and i know the Firex 3.1 is not E-type compatible.
so you can't fit any BB mount version with your current chainset because the spindle is too short and it would damage the crank interface if you did.
(I've seen them fail on bikes specced with BB mount F mechs in the past, and checked the Truvativ compatability chart to find the cause and get warranty replcements)
You need a new chainset to make it work.

What you need is a double and bash chianset with an external bottom bracket like this http://tinyurl.com/63s9dqv
With this you can run the double chain device metioned in your post and you need the bottom bracket mount type. Obviously you lose the outer chainring but it doesn't sound like you need one for your style of riding. The inner and middle chain rings are both slightly taller gears than you have at present. Not sure if you feel you need a lower gear for climbing but an 11-34 rear cassette may help depending on what you have at the moment.
All easy to fit if you have the right tools but the first time you fit an externall BB it is a good idea to have the frame faced so it may be easier to get your LBS to fit it all.

Wow lots of information there Matt; cheers fella. I'm looking to replace my crankset as it is so I'll certainly look in to that. Thanks for taking the time to type that up
