Has anyone tried the iPhone 3GS as a GPS device with the Dahon Biologic bike mount and hub dynamo attached ReeCharge unit? Are the accessories satisfactory and how effective is the iPhone 3GS as a stand-alone GPS device (with which apps/map/software)?
Hoping for yet another long European trip this year and would dearly love to leave the 6 inch high pile of maps behind!

If you're going for a long tour then it might well be worth considering getting a dedicated GPS - eg a Garmin eTrex or even a Dakota.

I have a 3GS and that bike mount, but not the Dahon charger (use a PowerJunkie battery).

In terms of apps, you're going to want something stored on the phone not streamed obv. If you're sticking to roads, then CoPilot Live is absolutely brilliant imo, and reasonably priced. Turn by turn, with 'bicycle' as a supported mode of transport, really clear and customisable, and reasonably priced. There's a version for just the UK, or Europe etc so make sure you choose the right one.

The case you get from Dahon is durable, and you don't lose much in touchscreen sensitivity when your phone is inside. It's showerproof, but I wouldn't trust it in a serious downpour.

Any smartphone chews battery using GPS. Would be worth testing it all out before arriving in Europe with no maps
