First crash

And a good one at that :D about 20mph around a big-ish corner, not a clue what happened as its all a blank, I assume either the front gave way as the road has some fine gravel on it. Looks like I went face first right into the black stuff as my cloths are mark free, my face is not.

I remember getting up, walking to the side of the road, then, i assume I fell over again, and next thing I remember was a very kind builder helping me up, then taking me home. top marks to that man!

55 seconds into the ride too, not a good start to my day

Brand new £100 Giro helmet wrecked, but at least it did its job and a trip to A&E wasnt as needed, or worse. Needless to say I've already got another lid on order, I'd hate to think what condition I'd be in without it.

15 mins after the crash

6 hours after the crash, the cheek swelling is going down and turning black, looked like a tennis ball at first!

Are you sure you didn't pass out before crashing? Only reason for asking is it is unusual to land on your face as your instincts usually lead to you protecting it at the cost to some other part of your body.

  • Yes, yes, all very interesting, but you haven't told us the important thing......How was the bike?

Seriously though, they are some nasty looking injuries and I hope you're recovering well. By the way, top marks for ordering a new helmet straight away - get straight back on...

Anyway, got to dash, have a strange urge to watch my Elephant Man DVD...

Thanks for the comments gentlemen. Eye is starting to close up now from the swelling, which is a pain but I'm sure it will go down soon enough

Pross, good question. I've never had any issues with passing out at all, not even when I was younger, so I cant see it happening. I was a little tired this morning but nothing extreme but it does seem weird that I went face first with little or no intervention with my hands, although my right palm does feel a little bruised. However, if you think along the lines of car crashes/serious accidents, you can rarely remember it, maybe this is a case.

Odd, but painful all the same![/list]

bike seems fine, after the shock wore off, i stuck it back in the shed and got ready for work (via the car!). I assume there are a few scratches but nothing stood out on the quick once over i gave it, but I'm yet to give it a good look into.

A crash wont keep me off my bike though, I'm fairly used to them on my MTB but this is by far the worst I've had. I'd get back on it tomorrow if I had a lid, now I know first hand just how important they are

I wouldn't post my picture on the forum if I was as ugly as that.

Where is the injury by the way?

Hope you get better soon. Just shown my son, your picture as a reminder to the over confident youth 'who don't crash!' why I insist he wears a helmet.

Perhaps he struck the bars/brake hoods hard as a result of losing it. Glad you're OK anyway.

Blimey Eyon that must have been quite a spill, hope the pain subsides as soon as. Fair play as well for getting the sketch done so soon afterwards, it's really captured the damage to your face. :)

Yoiks. Nasty. If you were unconscious/knocked out I think a trip to the doctor would be a good idea. Hope all is OK.

I had one of them red bikes but I don't any more. Sad face.

Great idea, in theory. But.... I come off my MTB all the time, for example I hit a root the other month at the wrong angle, fell off, small amount of pain but got back up and learnt my lesson, hit roots with authority and since then no issues, learn by your mistakes. I've done this plenty of times and it makes you a better rider.

This time, I genuinely dont know what happened, and thats a worrying thing as I cant remember what not to do next time. Did i go too fast into the corner? too much lean? too much brake applied at the wrong time? loose road surface? what exactly? as someone who is new to road cycling this is, IMO a bad thing. Needless to say, next time i go around that corner, it will be sloooow

As for my face, well I have a rather shiny black eye, which now cant open as both lids are all inflamed, the eye white is now red from blood, and now the adrenalin has worn off I am sapped of energy.

Went to the docs this morning, and was told "it will get better", so its a sit and wait. On a happier note, my new lid will be here tomorrow, so all being well I might be out this sunday, but maybe on my MTB, slower = safer!

Back on the bike today, though admittedly I took the MTB out. A little nervous to start but after a few miles and some corners I got back into the swing of things.

Face looking a little worse for wear but its mostly just bruising now. Will try out a ride to work on the road bike this tuesday, including "the corner", but I'm real glad I got right back on the saddle as quick as I could.

Me, with a head which is much bigger than it normally is, very happy before getting back on the saddle for the first time.
