Marzocchi 55r qr problem

Hello all, I'm struggling to remove my front wheel because the axle won't come out of my fork. For those that don't know, it is a 20mm qr axle.

The axle is unscrewing on the side of the brake but on the opposite side (the side of the qr lever) the collar the axle screws into just keeps turning.

I did not notice this the first time I tried unscrewing it until I heard some worrying metallic clicking as it was pulling the forks apart and the brake disc started pulling on the caliper

I hope all that rambling makes sense to someone and they can offer some advice! :(

Any help greatly appreciated

  • I have the same forks, on the other end of axle from the lever there is a little clip that you need to hold open in order to get it to unscrew properly if you know what I mean.

As far as the metallic noise you're hearing, mine make the same noise when unscrewing. Completely normal![/i]

Thanks mate but I know about the little clip, the axle is unscrewing fine on that side, it is the opposite side that is just spinning :(
  • You may just need to continue unscrewing, mine took quite a long time to get all the way unscrewed and out.

I don't follow. It screws in on the brake side, not the lever side.

Well thats what I originally thought but after it wouldn't pull through on the lever side I thought that side must have been threaded too. Do you think I just need to stop being a wimp and just yank it through? Because it seems stuck on something

It's not just catching on the wheel hub is it? Have you tried it with the bike upside down and gently giggled the wheel? My 55rv take a bit of manipulation.

Why are MTB economics; spend twice as much as you intended, but only half as much as you wish you could afford?

    Problem sorted.

Thanks yeehaamcgee, after you informed me that there was only one side threaded I just tapped the axle through with a socket and rubber mallet and hey presto!

I'm not sure what was wedging it in but it took a few whacks.

    Thanks for the help

Nah it wasn't catching on the hub, the axle wouldn't pull out of the near side fork at all. The wheel wouldn't move laterally on the axle when there was a bit of space on the opposite side to the lever so it must have been the hub sticking to the axle somehow :?

Ah, I know what causes that. Sometimes you get a little rust on the inside of the wheel bearings, which binds it to the axle.

I think you're right, would a smear of lithium grease on the axle sort that problem out?

A smear of any grease would help, but I don't think there's any way to eliminate it completely, in the long run. Maybe a thin film of grease on the axle, and make sure that you check it once a month or two.
