squeaky crank/bb...
im sure this is a common problem and the question has been asked before because ive had this problem before but just havn't got round to finding out more about it tbh, if you can direct me to a previosu thread that would be great.
bought a second hand standard 2010 trek 2.5 recently with the ultegra groupset
when i apply a certain amount of force on the pedals a squeak comes from the crank or the bb once every revolution
could someone please help advise me on this, how can it be fixed/whats wrong .. etc thanks

Hi gaffy
First thoughts would be that the BB bearings are on their way out.
However before you go to the expense of stripping the BB down and replacing it, I would look at buying a new set of pedals. I say this from bitter experience after spending time and money replacing the BB on my 14 year old Mercian only to find that the creaking noise was still there. At that point I changed the pedals and Hey Presto! - creaking noise was gone.
Can't be a bad thing to change your pedals from time to time anyway and it may cure your problem without resorting to a BB replacement0 -
Also check everything is greased - I was convinced that my BB was creaking but it turned out to be the seat post which wasnt really greased. It had bugged me for ages and I had even changed the BB - sometimes it would be OK but sometimes not...0

cheers lads, good advice will give everything a re-teighten and grease up when i get a second, hopefully it's not the bb, think there's an equal chance of it being any one of those.
that said i got the bike for a decent price on ebay it had covered only 500 miles however those 500 miles had been completed all at once in le jog ! which could point to the bike being thrashed, here's hoping, and if you're buying a bike on ebay and you're paying for the courier make sure they box it in a standard size bike box this plonker packed it in a bike box made for about 3 bikes and there was the bike in the bottom left hand corner surrounded by.. nothing (air) courier cost me £65!!!(
cheers tho0 -
come to think of it, the bikes were donated by trek to the charity which used them for le jog so it is quite possibly that the people using the bikes had no idea about bikes hence selling them soon after and probably rode them incorrectly and thrrashed them
just in case, the worst case scenario is true could anyone suggest a solution, would i need to replace the whole bb? anyone suggest an appropriate decent one, ultegra chainset so think its an ultegra bb would have assumed it'd be decent enough to stand up to 500 miles :L

Squeak once per revolution points to something other than BB (when a BB goes, you'll know it. It will be grinding all the time, throughout the pedal stroke, making an awful racket). Crank bolts tightened, pedals on tight, saddle as someone mentioned? Also your shoes aren't distorting and squeaking against the crank when you put some torque into pedalling? Cleats on shoes are ok (lube those bolts too).
Squeaks also might sound like they are coming from the BB area when in reality they come from wheel axles, hubs, stems, etc. If you've got a friend with a turbo trainer, put your bike on there and pedal it in the biggest gear slowly while your friend listens around the bike to where it's coming from.
Sealed BB cups should last more than 500 miles and unless someone's installed them or the cranks wrong, there's pretty much no way you could "ride them incorrectly and thrash them" as you said. That said, though, Shimano BBs are actually quite cheap to replace, and very easy (remove cranks, don't even have to take the chain off), remove BB with special tool, thread and tighten new ones on, put cranks back on. So if it is the BB, don't worry too much about it, it's like a £20 part at most. Buy the BB tool and you can do it yourself at home.

I'd say given that history it's unlikely to be the BB.
Grease and reinsert the seatpost and both QR skewers. Loosen and retighten the saddle clamp and the bolts securing the bars to the stem (do these up evenly)
Try a different set of pedals.
And do they have any more of these ridden once bikes for sale???0 -
could be simple as there is dirt and grime in the bb and needs cleaning and re-greasing,
i had exactly the same problem and i stripped it all gave it a thorough clean, greased it all put it all bak together..... problem solved0 -
Another culprit is squeaky pedal cleatsMake mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0
