Help: Brake pad removal

I have a 2005 Spec Hardrock and I'm trying to replace the brake pads. On my other bike it's just a case of getting a pair of pliers an pulling on the stalks and they come out like cartridges. However on this thing it's as if they are threaded together with a pin which connects either end to the brake caliber. Is this pin supposed to come out? It's bent at one end and I don't want to straighten it in the event it isn't supposed to be straightened.

All I can tell is that they are Shimano mechanical brakes. They're 6 years old so antiques in the grand scheme of things..0

Endless Googling has brought me to the conclusion they are Deore 515 brake pads. Thanks Aidso0
