Shimano cassette

I'm new to this forum thing so excuse me if I do this wrong. I am posting this in Beginners as that is what I am but this may be better in the Workshop section.

I have a Trek 1.7 with Shimano 105 throughout. I need to replace my chain and cassette. Being a complete non-mechanic I have asked my LBS to do this. I specified that I wanted to replace with 105 but the man at the shop said that they don't do a 11-25 in 105 so it will have to be a HG-50.

I did my research and found that Shimano and various retailers all list the 105 11-25. I rang him back to tell him this and he said that it was coming up as HG-50 but "it will do the same job" although may be a different finish. (I suppose a Mini will, strictly speaking, do the same job as a Rolls Royce). I am a bit suspicious as HG-50 appears to be a lower spec cassette (previously he tried to fit a Tiagra front mech when that needed replacing rather than 105).

Does anyone know whether the HG-50 is the same or whether I should insist on proper 105? I don't want to downgrade all of the bits on my bike. Should I also specify that I specifically want a 105 chain?

I don't think you can get a 10 speed HG-50 cassette. You can, however, get an 11-25 105 cassette as i have one on my bike.

I think your bike mechanic doesn't know what he's talking about so my advice would be to do it yourself. Go to the Park Tools website to see how to do it. Changing a casette and chain is really simple, although my advice would be to use a KMC chain, not a Shimano one. That comes with a "missing link" which allows you to get the chain on and off easier.
