Steel frame Hardtail

Hi all
This is a bit cheeky, my first post here and asking for advice.
First a bit about what I want it for, I live near Oxford most of my riding will be done locally on local trails. With a few weekends thrown at the lake district etc. Im nearly 56 now so speed is not the priorty - hence my thought about getting a steel hardtail. It will be used for a varierty of tasks including communting to work some of the time.
I have an old Commencel Normal disc but It has seen better days and to be honest I do fancy a new bike
I like to get on the Cyclescheme but my compant limits us to £1000 max. so my limit is £1000
I have been looking at a Gensis Latituide 00 - any suggestions on this bike or others I should have a look at?
Am I going down the wrong track looking at a steel frame?
Thanks

This would be worth a thought, great value and spec for the money;

Ask yourself if you can live with a 30 lbs bike weight wise. That's what the entire build will come in at, there or thereabouts. If you're strong and don't tire easy then go for it. There are lighter aluminium alternatives which have their advantage long term.
Nip into a halfords and check out a VooDoo Wanga, woud give you an idea0 -
Second the On One 456. Great bikes & very popular, never heard anything bad about the 456, owners seem to love them.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

scratch that, they have no steel 2010s left by the looks of it.0 -
Looks nice Trail Jacker thanks.
blister plus - the main I wanted a steel frame was for that bit suppleness/comford I thought steel would provide over aluninium. I looked at the test of £750 hardtails in a recent magazine and the alimininium onesd came out at approx 28-29 lbs.
Would the 1 or 2 lbs make that much difference?0 -
Thanks for the link trail jacker. I now have the unreasonable urge to get a luminous bike I don't need.Statistically, Six Out Of Seven Dwarves Aren't Happy0

Steel doesn't necessarily equate to suppleness or comfort unfortunately, it's not that cut and dry. Its also down to design. I don't find the on-one 456 a particularly comfortable or supple ride, for example. But i do a Cotic Soul build (which would be just out of your price range and probably not available through C2W) and a Pipedream Sirius 853 (which i have - and is a 28lbs ride).
I notice the difference between a 30 and 30+ and a 28 lbs bike when I'm lugging it about and doing long rides. Anything at or below 28 is a nice ideal weight for me, but that's personal.
A 1k aluminium hardtail should get you a 27-28 or below bike and if ou choose right a pretty nice and compliant ride.0 -
Thanks blister pus - any recommadtions for sub 1000 ali hardtails?0

wrong person to be asking really but the ones i demo'd and liked were kinesis maxlight 120 and Rock Lobster Tig Team SL, which i think is available through C2W and they'll do the build to the price you want.

but you really need to demo these things, what i like you might not, etc.0 -

On-One do C2W. Scandal is a nice ride. And they'd do you a build well within budget.0 -
Thanks all, given plenty to think about and to check out.0
