IBM who built deep blue, the computer that beat world chess champ gary kasparov have built a new machine called Watson. It can understand natural language and speak. On valentines day it took on 2 contestants in Jeopardy on US Tv, answering the questions in real time at the same moment as the human contestants heard them.
It can perform 80 trillion calculations a second.
the show starts at about 6mins 30 but the preceding bit is quite interesting.
the plan is to develop it to use as an assitstant to surgeons and doctors.
