Cycling in the UK

Hi,

I need to complete my residential section of Duke of Edingburgh, and was wondering if I could do something cycling related. Most of the sites I've looked at seem to be for families, covering quite small distances per day. Does anybody know of (or been on) some sort of tour/challenge with a different group of people for 5 days, which is a bit more challenging?

Cheers

  • Have a look on the Sustrans site for routes near where you live.

You should be able to construct a safe, decent route by joining up Sustrans routes, B roads etc.

You should find that your DofE "teacher" can suggest camp-sites for you. Also National Park information centres etc often have attached fields that DofE groups etc can use.

Assuming you are doing this via school, are there any Explorer scouts in your group? They will be able to give you access to any scout/guide campsite on the route.

A set of my eldest scouts (I guess they will be younger than you) did Berwick to Newcastle last summer, carrying all their own kit. They averaged about 40 miles a day thru the Cheviots, so I would suggest that as a minimum, assuming you are fit and heathy year 11/12/13 types.

They also found the Tesco's cheapo pannier racks that fasten onto the seatpost good for their three day journey.
  • Thanks, but that's not quite what I'm looking for.

the residential section needs to be with a group of people who you don't know, and I thought a guided tour seemed to be a good idea. However, I do quite a bit of cycling and would prefer longer distances (around 100km or more). I'm not even sure if these sort of tours exist, but I've seen the same sort of thing for families and was wondering if anyone knew of any

    Cheers
  • Beer googles translate "residential" as "expedition" shock

Skedaddle and the Cycle Touring Club (and other companies) do group tours in the UK. But I don't know they'd be quite what you're looking (eg older cyclists, staying in pubs/B&Bs rather than hostels/campsites). Possibly the yha may do something. I'd have thought if you were doing the award through an organisation like the scouts then that might be the network to use: eg could you advertise for others to do a tour with you?

Sustrans also organize things like volunteer workcamps.
