BB Axle size?

I have attempted to fit a Shimano UN54 Bottom Bracket Square Taper to my Ragley mmmBop with a 118 axle - the BB is 73mm.

BB fits well but when trying to fit the cranks (Shimano
M442 Square Taper Chainset) the driveside fits shug to the frame and will not turn.

Do I need a longer axle or can I use spacers....

Help!

    you will need the correct bb with the correct axle length for the chainline you need.

    Forgive the ignorance, but where do I get those details from?

    the chain line from the frame maker.

    But please check exactly what BB you have as for a FC-M442 crankset you should be using a 113mm axel to give the normal 50mm chain line. (But if it is a OE one bought cheap from CRC you may need a 121 or 126 axle).
