Hi Folks,

My rear Xero ESD hub has just died on me as in the free hub has jammed solid. Which gives me an excuse to buy new rear wheel. Mainly XC/AM and the very odd bit of DH so something strong, and lighter than my old wheel (1200g) and max budget of £100.

So whats the recomendation?

Merlin hand built XT Hub with Mavic XC717 Rims (whats the dif between XC717 and XM719)?

Superstar slicks?

Any advice is most welcome.

Thanks in advance..

  • +1 for the Merlin build. The XM719 is a wider and stronger rim than the XC717 (X Mountain rather than X Country).

The fact that you do AM and a bit of DH suggests you want the XM719.

depends what hub it's on, I wouldn't buy anything with loose ball bearings these days, halo tornado/freedom is a pretty solid choice with cartridge bearings.

  • Thats whats making me go towards the super star wheels as they are cartridge bearings and i can get a pair for £140.

Anybody have any experience of ChainReactionCycles for wheel builds?
