Am buiding an MTB using a On-One Inbred Frame and Kona P2 Rigid Forks.
I dont have any other parts e.e Wheels/Tyres, V Brakes, Gears, Handlebars, Cranks etc.
I have a budget of £200 for all this. Shall i buy the parts individually off eBay or buy a decent enough used MTB and take the parts off that?
Can this be done for £200 ?
Any recommendations for the bike to purchase for £200 i.e specialized, Giant etc ?

If you only have frame & forks, you will need:
Headset, Handlbars, Stem, Headset spacers, Grips, Chainset, Chain, Cassette, Wheels, Quick-releases, Tubes, Tyres, Front mech, Rear mech, Gear cable kit, Fr & Rr brakes, Brake cable kit, Seatpost, Saddle, Pedals...
For £200 ? ... sounds like a challenge, but I reckon there's plenty of BikeRadar members who could chip-in with bits and pieces. It would be useful to know the seat tube diameter.
Wheels & chainset will be the biggest expense. If you can get these for under £100 you're in with a chance of coming in on budget.
or...
If you go for the 'buy a bike & transplant the parts' option you'll ideally need a bike with the same diameter seat tube, otherwise you'll still need to source a seatpost from somewhere.0 -
Get online make a shopping list and see.I don't do smileys.

Seat is 27.2mm0

I don't think he was asking you for the diameter, that's something you would need to know along with making sure BB's, headset, seatpost claamp, front mech clamp etc are the same size.I don't do smileys.

Headset - M Part (about £10)
Handlbars, Stem - (easily available here or ebay for £15 both for something decent. Just bought a race face bar and stem nearly new for £20)
Headset spacers (again a few quid tops from local bike shop)
Grips (plenty of non lock on decent for £3-4 in local bike shops)
Chainset, Chain, Cassette - (second hand you are looking at £30 chainset in ok condition, chain and cassette if cheap new shimano about £20)
Wheels (plenty on here about £50-60 delivered for ok quality)
Quick-releases (if paying £60 above expect to get them thrown in)
Tubes, Tyres, (tubes and tyres can be bought for as little as £25 all in on CRC - have WTB ones for £9 at mo. Not folding but ok cheap tyres)
Front mech (£10 second hand roughly)
Rear mech (again, about £10-15 if lower spec - deore or older models)
Gear cable kit (pass but say a tenner)
Fr & Rr brakes and levers (plenty of people selling on here or retrobike £20 for full set including pads - should be getting decent avids for that price too)
Brake cable kit (say a tenner)
Seatpost (second hand a tenner as common sixe. New cheap clamp £3),
Saddle, (fiver)
Pedals... (fiver)
So my rough guesses make that about £230 unless you get bargains. I would personally look on ebay, search for nearby bikes, with local pick up only, wait and buy a bargain and strip and sell its bits that you cant use. That should pay for the parts that dont fit.
Are you building it yourself? I'd be worried if you dont know what parts to check for compatibility if you were undertaking it yourself?0 -

I like the prices above. I've only browsed through some parts at new prices.
I've just been doing some research the past few days so havn't looked at much parts on eBay.
I havn't mucked about with bikes for about 15 years but been looking at tutorials on forums and YouTube. Some things I might get LBS to fit.
This would be so much easier if I just wanted a Aluminum framed bike but I want Steel.
Alternatively if an On-One Inbred built bike was going on eBay for £400 with decent components then I could just buy that and save me hassle of building but there's not many of those on eBay, I saw one the other day on there going for £350 but it wasn't my size.
I have till summer to sort a MTB so can wait around for bargains.
I will make a list of specific components needed with prices on eBay and post on here.0 -
If you have £200 budget your frame and project 2s would get at least £120 so thats not far off a fully built bike if you save for a bit? Put a wanted ad on here? Might be cheaper in the long run and less hassle?0

Total budget is £400 fully built.
I've budgeted £200 For the frame and rigid fork. (Havnt bought yet).0 -
What size frame do you need?

18" frame, seatpost and saddle. £30.
Also, its probably lighter than an inbred.0 -

That's a nice frame but I need a steel frame. The inbred frame weighs 2.5KG.0 -
Why do you need steel?0

eventually i'd like to do cycle tours around aisa/south america.
Steel can be welded if broken. Am more confident on it.0 -
If I was planning on doing touring, I'd be looking for something more specific than 2nd hand components on a steel MTB frame. If you're set on that course, you need to consider things like rack mountings and using a hub gear rather than traditional mechs as they usually have longer life.0

I Built the wife a bike for £56, most the bits came from a GT Chucker I bought off ebay for £56, the bits I didn't use off that I sold for about £80 which subsidised the brand new frame, headset, forks and saddle.
Find a decent bike on ebay with the bits you want on, preferably in need of work and badly listed and you'll get all you need dead cheap!
SimonCurrently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
Go on ebay - do a search on Boardman / Carrera / Voodoo / GT and you'll pick up a decent bike for under £300 if you're prepared to wait around for the right one.0

A proper Touring bike like Surly Long Hurl Trucker or a Thorn bike go for £1000.
Rohloff hub gears cost pver £500.
I know what frame am getting. Just need info on components.0
