Against my inner self telling me not to ride last Saturday in the torrential rain I did venture out and as a result the rain seems to have breached my BB and my cranks feel like they are submerged in treacle!! :x

I currently run FSA Gossamer Megaexo.

This is not the first time I have had issue with rain and my BB so I am going to admit defeat and replace the whole crankset.

I did try previously using different BB cups (Dura Ace) but these would not fit the cranks (despite other people saying otherwise)

I have my eye on the Fulcrum Racing R. Torq R Chainset 8) Has anyone got any experiences, good or bad with these??

I think these are effectively just rebranded Campagnolo ultra torque chainsets, so what goes for them goes for the Fulcrums. Not sure which campag chainset corresponds to which Fulcrum one.
  • Good cranks. I've had a couple of sets of these, and still have one on an otherwise Record equipped Colnago. Done several thousand KM with zero problems, but I don't ride much in the wet, so won't comment on their weather protection!

Supposedly the Torq R is approx Centaur carbon (the good version, Ultra Torque 10 speed)
    Torq RS is Chorus
    Torq RRS is Record equivalent

BB Cups are interchangeable with Campag ones too.

  • It's all down to the bearing quality...

It's a 24mm axle so the DA should have fitted, why didn't it out of interest?

Personally I'd fit a hope stainless one as they're pretty reliable especially if the shell is properly faced.

All external bearing BBs/cranks are pretty hopeless IME for durability / weather resistance - getting 12-18 months from any set of bearings appear to be the norm. Try changing the BB for something more durable e.g. Hope stainless. Fulcrum cranks are near identical to the Campagnolo offerings and it's a well-proven design but again bearing life isn't helped by prolonged use in wet weather - I've had a pair of Campagnolo on my race bike for a few years - the first set of bearings didn't last 6 months, particularly following an extremely wet ride in Belgium - but have been fine since replaced.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

I wonder, could Campagnolo's own high end ceramic (CULT) bearings actually be worth the money in this respect? They are supposed to be able to run with minimal or no lubrication.

The joke is that I've not had much wet weather riding ( fair weather cyclist ;) ) but I need to ride in all weathers so need a reliable set.

When I tried the DA cups the crank would not thru the actual cups!!
