Seating UST tyres

Does anyone have any tried and tested methods for seating UST tyres onto Mavic rims? I've heard that you need a track pump at the very least and that a mini-pump wouldn't work properly in creating the initial seal?

You need to get air into them fast

Track pump or compressor, mini pump would no be able to shift enough air quickly enough

My Schwalbe Racing Ralph UST's went on to my Mavic Crossland UST wheelset with a track pump

  • use tubless valves with removable cores. Fit the tyres without sealant and remove valve cores, nip down to your local garage and a quick blast from their compressor seats the beads. they will go flat when you take the compressor off. Now use a syringe and inject your chosen sealant in via the valve and then refit you valve cores. you can now use any pump you like to put in your desired pressure. Simples.

  • Thanks for that, just have to wait for the gear to arrive and i'll give it a go.
  • You are slapping a washing up liquid solution all over the tyre bead and rims aren't you?

Some tubeless tyres and wheels are easier than others. My old Bonty rims were a sinch. The new wheels on my Zesty on the otherhand are a pig. That was a scrader/presta valve convertor and a compressor job.
  • Cheers, I've read that and will certainly be giving it a go, I'll be using Racing Ralphs on Mavic XM819's being built up by Merlin. I just need to pick out a sealant to use now.

Just got the wheels today and spent the afternoon setting them up and getting them on the bike, they appear to be holding pressure but going to check them again in the morning before first ride.
