dead shifter?

The front mech shifter appears to have died; when trying to shift up, rather than feel resistance for the shift, it's just loose and floppy and seems to take multiple tries to pick up the next pawl for the shift.

Is it likely to be repairable (is 15 years old) and if not would friction levers work for the front mech? as I'm loathe to buy a new set of shifters, given how old the groupset is and it may mean changing the brakes over to v brakes, if I can't find cantilever specific shifters.

A downtube shifter should work pretty much anything. Surely though you could find a replacement front shifter of the original type on Ebay?

just looked, they all seem to be for "V" brakes....but the ST-R221 (on Parkers) claim to be "Adjustable to work with V-brakes, calliper brakes, cantilever brakes and cable disc brakes
Optical gear display", can this be true
