how narrow do you want to go, conti GP (26x1.0) are super fast, good choice between 1.35 and 1.50" (I commute on 26x1.50 WTB slickasaurus).
Try some lightweight road slick/semi-slick and you'll be amwazed at how much faster spinning they are.

I recently fitted some Continental Travel Contact, they're 26x1.75 and apparently semi slicks but i wouldn't use them off road. My commute is now a lot smoother and easier but i'm sure it would be even better with dedicated road tyres.2011 Lapierre Zesty 3140

Continental used to make some 1.3" slicks in 26" that were pretty quick - you had to pump them up pretty hard though - like a road bike in fact.
Just googled it for you: Conti Sport Contact - designed for city bike messengers etc.

Not hugely light, and a 1" fatboy or equivalent will roll a little faster. However, these are tough as nails, and grip very well in the corners. And it will make an enourmous difference over 2.35" Off-road tyres! Anything from 1.25" to 1.5" wide will be ok. And pump them up!
