Hi all, just wondering if anyone has any advice as to which phone would be best. I mainly want a gps enabled phone to be able to track my cycling routes so thats why im looking at android phones. The sony x10 is nice & small but the guy in the phone shop has just said he thinks that the wildfire is the better phone. Has anyone else got any advice at all.

  • HTC, I have a Desire after several Sony Ericssons which I thought were fine. My next phone will be whatever HTC have out at that time as the Desire is a great phone, imagine the Wildfire to be very similar really.

I have the HTC Touch Pro 2. Fantastic phone working on Windows OS so sadly not Android. Avoid anything Sony Ericsson call a mobile telephone.
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.
  • Hmmmmm, 2 votes for htc. I must add though, i've had my current sony ericson for a couple of years without any problems (not a smartphone though but only needs charging once a week)
Both phones are about £130, if i had double i'd go with the htc desire. If i win the lottery i'd get an iphone.

  • htc makes some of the best phones on the market at the moment
even though they are a relative new brand in the uk, they are massive in the far east and have been around for years
  • 3rd sony in a row and on the x10 now, use it loads for route mapping and training apps galore. Cant fault it.

Would sugest seeing whats most popular in your work/social groups and use hat to compare notes etc
  • ive been looking at both too, carphone warehouse are doing the sony at half price at the moment so if you want a bargain its probably a no brainer.

however, in the reviews i have read, the balance of opinion is that the wildfire is better. slower cpu than the sony, but the sony apparently has bad battery life - not something you want to be worrying about out on ride...
  • The batt lasts a day and a half .... ish. I've always left mobis on charge overnight so never run out of power. Longest ride with wifi and gps enabled and playing music was nearly three hours and had oodles of power left so no worries there :)

spend a little extra and get the desire, x10 mini good but only if you have tiny hands. desire screen much better than the wildfire.

  • HTC. They've been around for years branded as the orange spv and o2 xda range and generic t-mobile phones before deciding to come out as themselves.

I spent a while checking reviews and umming & aahing the Sony got regularly worse reviews all round than the HTC stable & in store sales were quite disparaging about it generally. I like sonys Ive had a few but vs pretty much any other smartphone, I think the screen on the sony will likely be too small for decent route & map usage.

I've got the htc desire and only drawback is the battery hunger when you're using gps and other stuff regularly. I use mine heavily & struggle to last a day.

You want to get back to your supplier about the battery drain with GPS and WiFi on. My wife has an HTC Hero that experienced the same problem. A call to our service provider and a new phone arrived. No issues with losing power with GPS and WiFi on since. My HTC TP 2 doesn't experience the problem either.

To the OP, if you can afford it, go for the shortest contract plan you can. Smart phones are evolving all the time and in my experience do start to struggle the closer you get to 24 months usage.

    Another vote for the Wildfire.

Rolling them out at work and they are a superb phone. Rivals the iPhone imo.

  • Mrs. Elephant has the Wildfire, it's a decent phone, but the screen is pretty poor and the CPU is slow. You will struggle to play Angry Birds on it. :?

I have an HTC, and coincidently, my GF's firm does their PR...

Do my household income an indirect favour and get an HTC.
