i bought a new bb from south downs bikes last week, it arrived today..... the wrong size. iv spoken to them on the phone and they've admitted a 'misprint' on their website, and abruptly told to return it. my question is, am i within my rights to ask them to refund me the return postage costs as it was an error on their part?

yes, or maybe even ask them to send a courier to pick it up so you're not out of pocket at all?

iv already spoken to them so dont really want to be perceived as the 'awkward customer' by phoning again, il write a letter with the package. I just wanted to see where i stand.

Do not worry about taking their time, just be clear.

Explain that as they are paying for the return postage, which service do they want it sent by, and do they want insured.

Concise and clear, nothing more irritating than somone waffling on trying to be too helpful.

They made a mistake, a minor one, but the liability is with them, you are doing them a favour sending it back. You would be within your rights to demand they mail the parts you ordered and they can collect the BB from you if they want. So you are being nice sending it back and they should appreciate it.
Why would I care about 150g of bike weight, I just ate 400g of cookies while reading this?
  • I would ring again. Maybe they assummed you knew your rights and therefore knew they were paying. Clear it up and see when they are picking it up - if big supplier they will pay a flat fee (guess this is how it works) for the year re couriers so one pickup won't 'cost' them anything so therefore better for them to arrange pickup then refund your costs.
