Is the Landy your only car? Probably not I guess, you'll need another one for when it's broken down
Wouldn't go for a 500 but a few pennies more would get an SV650N or an older Hornet for something with a relaxed position but a bit more fun.Uncompromising extremist0 -
I've got a surfmat special for if it rains, so I don't have to die or get wet.
Landy is just a toy, but a petrol land rover is getting a bit expensive to run. Hell, the BMW is getting expensive to run for commuting duties!
Not sure about a 650, my bike experience extends to the sort with pedals, and a few goes on friends bikes around fields. The last time was a Fazer on Mayday field at Thetford after a D2D race.0 -

Get a bike, much more fun, and cheaper in the long run, than a LandRover.
It's probably a good idea not to get a 1000cc sports bike, though I think you realise this, but an sv650 or an older 500cc should be fine.
If you get a daul purpose bike you can go everywhere you used to go in the rover (without getting stuck )... and it'll have a more upright riding position / be taller so commuting will be easier. Now that we are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak and not to please ourselves. I assume you've got a full bike license?
Don't sell the Landy, just SORN it and buy a commuter hack. Hurry prices will rise quickly once the sun starts shining.
One of the most fun bikes I never expected to be fun was a yamaha TDM900. Pretty light on the juice too and fairly cheap to ensure.
500cc bikes aren't very interesting they all seem to be built for learners. I wounldn't go for a dual purpose bike if your primary need is commuting. You really want road tyres on tarmac.0 -
Auto Gas the Landy?
Cut fuel cost in half, plus keeping it you'll look classless of the good kind rather than riding a motorbike and just looking classless0 -

You're right! If I sell the landy for about £1800 I can use that £1800 to autogas the landy oh wait no I can't.
The landy is a very very expensive toy. When it breaks, it costs a freaking fortune to put right.
I have no bike licence at all. Total bike noob. A learner, so to speak.0 -
motorbikes terrify me, i like the idea of them but cant stop my mind from thinking about the danger involved.
i think you should get one.0 -

For the first time ever, you and I agree on something!
I do get the feeling that the day a motorbike stops scaring you is probably the day you're horribly killed. Same as riding road bikes on the road. Complacency kills.0 -
I'm not at all afraid of my bike. I'm a bit afraid of the rider, he's a cock but the bike's spot on.
If you're riding for transport/commuting then a little bike really makes sense but if you do your full licence you might as well use it and get something that works a bit better.Uncompromising extremist0 -
One simple rule: The machine is only as dangerous as the person in charge. That's why I would stick with the Landrover."Youth's a mask, but it don't last
live it long and live it fast."

If you want to start with a 500cc bike then you need to do DAS. That means a grand will go on the bike lessons and some basic gear. Then insurance is going to cost you £3-400 (assuming you are old), which gives you £4-500 for a bike. err gues what that doesn't buy you much.
Or you could take your cbt, £100 get a 125 on L-plates, take your time learning get a couple of lessons pass the test and delay the bigger bike 2 years until you are de-restricted.
Every year it gets harder and harder to pass the bike test. Do not delay - you will regret it.
I'm the other way, I feel fine when I riding motorbikes - its seeing other people that scares me.0 -
I'll be doing DAS. Can't be arsed with riding a 125 or riding on L plates. I've been driving for eight years averaging 20K a year. I'm not putting targets back on.0
