I should know by now but is it the centre of the cleat you line up with the ball of your foot for a starting point, or is it the front point of the cleat you line up with the ball of foot?

I've been doing the former so hopefully thats right.

Thanks.

Yup, for most people the pedal spindle should be aligned pretty much with the ball of the foot, so wherever on the cleat that corresponds to (I guess it might depend on the design of the pedal system). There is a little protruding bone you can feel on the outside edge of your foot just where the ball of the foot is, and that's supposed to be where the spindle aligns to.

Of course that's just a starting point, you might want to move the cleat slightly backwards or forwards depending on riding style / type of riding.

The 'ball' of your foot is actually the large rear most joint of the big toe. I start with this about 1cm in front of the pedal axle with the foot at it's normal angle and the crank horizontal. If you have the foot too far back it puts strain on the calf muscles and Achiles tendon.
