Help changing the spring in a Rockshox Recon Silver

After talking to TK tuned i ordered a x-firm spring for my new Recon Silvers. The spring is actually a 06-09 spring but they said it should fit.

Came today so tried to fit it following a guide i saw on youtube.

Problem i've got is that the spring doesn't pull out like it does in the video. So looked on the RS website for a guide and they say that the lowers need to be removed first. Is this the only way of doing it? as it seems strange that the video shows the spring coming out so easily and yet all the models in the guide say that the lowers need to be removed.

I've broke too many things by being heavy handed in the past so didn't want to try and force it out to much. Although the force i did use i would have thought it would come out if it was going to.

  • Follow RS guide.... the steps changed with the years. That video is for older forks.
  • Thought that would be the case, just wanted to check i wasn't missing something. Ordered myself some new oil and grease, hopefully it'll be delivered tomorrow.

Does that mean that the 06-09 spring will probably not fit then? As these things obviously go togther differently. The guy i spoke to at TF Tuned reckons it's unlikely they'll have changed the springs??

If the spring doesnt just pull out of the leg its highly likely you ordered the wrong spring for your fork.

I did exactly the same thing, ordered the 09 spring when infact i (and im sure you aswell) need the U Turn spring with the rod attached to the bottom of the spring.

There's a bolt at the bottom of the left hand leg, if u unscrew that about halfway then tap it from the bottom this should loosen the spring and it will pull straight out and you'll find the spring you have is indeed the wrong one for your fork.
  • Cool, I was hoping there was an easier way of doing this.

How far out is half way?

I take it there is no oil loose doing it this way?

Bout half to 3 quarters of a cm should be enough then give it a tap and it should just lift out.
