Do some crown races have cuts in them?

Mine arrived today and am not sure why there is a cut in it, whats it for? Also whats the small rubber stop for? Sorry for the crap quality.

Some do.
Plug looks like it would be to put in the top cap bolt to make it look neat.

Yep, thats the best sort! Easy changing from one fork to another. I only ever by split ring headsets.

yeah i would go on the silver one being the one that sits up top below the top cap.

'vedge ring' is a new term to me!

I wish my new headset had a split crown race but it's a reducer one so no chance.

Clamp some mole grips lightly round the steerer and tap with hammer in multiple places to reset.

i would put the silver one as the crown race and the red being the locating wedge.

which has the bigger ID? as that will be the crown race.

Wouldnt have that thing any where near my forks the damage that could do to an aluminium steerer. :shock:

Its not even a crown race remover its a bearing seperator for getting wheel hub bearings off half shafts you can get one for about twelve quid from Halfords.

lol no chance that will work!

The crown race I have converts a 1 1/8" steerer to a 1.5" size bearing and is aluminum so is huge.

What headset is it anyway?

Silver one does have a shallow taper on other side to the bearing so maybe it is the crown race with taper to let you get under it to remove it. Upper one should be nice and snug to the normal part of the steerer and smaller as Nick says.
