After reading this article I was just wondering if anyone on here has ever been done for 'illegal cycling'?

I would also like to know what defines 'furious cycling'.

    Oh Hai! :D

Furious Cycling = 72mph in 30mph zone - I was fined for that one. I've also had a couple of cautions/warnings for speeding. and got given a written warning for "Illegal Cycling" a couple of years ago - riding up Queen's St (which is pedestrianised) in Cardiff at 06:30am. Apparently you can drive a 32t lorry up there at that time of day, but not cycle! Although I do believe this may have changed now.

    Now that is pretty impressive.

    thats what she said.
  • I was once pulled over in Burgess Hill for overtaking a police car on the wrong side of a roundabout in the town centre late at night: no other traffic around and he was going far too slow for my liking.
They seemed more interested in the bike after I'd done some suitably abject grovelling...

I used to routinely behave like a bloody hooligan when commuting on my road bike though - no wonder car drivers hate us...

Never seen a police car while ive been on the bike tho, but I break most of laws on that site lol, and I think id carry on cycling and act innocent tbh.. i ride on the side of the park so if the worst happenens i can quickly slip offroad ..

Got told off the other week by a police person out of the window of his car while stopped at the traffic lights for "weaving through traffic like a tit" and "riding only a few feet back from my bumper".

It's london ffs. It's hard not to get close to cars, plus everything was moving stupidly slowly.

Then the lights changed and I pedalled off down the cycle lane going against the one way system. He didn't seem too bothered really, probably a bit bored and though he'd tell off the youth on the bike.

Eh? Wrong side as in going anticlockwise?
It's perfectly legal to undertake on an island, as well as overtake. Obv unless you are a cock and cutting people up coming off the island, but then its just the cutting people up thats questionable.

Nearly got pulled for speeding, 40 in a 20 at silly am (so roads were dead). I say nearly as I lost him in some back streets/alleyways.

Plus the usual nipping over a section of pavement to get to a diff road (the conjoining road was one way, in the opposite direction).

Oh and whilst doing a bit of street repetitively told to move on and got a verbal warning etc.

Should have pleaded not guilty to the furious cycling bust, the speed on its own wouldn't be enough to secure a conviction. You actually have to injure or cause someone to be injured

S35 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861 (as amended by the Criminal Justice Act 1948).

You might have been up for Dangerous Cycling or careless cycling instead though.

Not sure where the expert (Roger Geffen?) who wrote the article got his knowledge from, but he is wrong on more than a few facts. EDIT: in fact the more I read about his "expertise" on traffic law the more I realise he isn't an expert at all.

Speed limits and riding on pavement are two I spotted. Others have commented on lighting requirements. It is generally correct, but wrong to say you cannot be prosecuted for the first and that it is illegal to do the 2nd. Its also misleading to say they can't breath test you - they don't need to.

What is quite amusing and you may not be aware (and given the confessions, I'm not even sure I should tell you), is that you don't have an obligation (under threat of criminal prosecution) to stop having crashed and damaged someones property. You also don't have to report it. Furthermore anyone who chased you down and apprehended you could be committing an offence in doing so provided that you had not deliberately caused the damage.
  • I always ride on the footpath because I am considerate to motorists (My school is on a steep hill, I go slow up hills that steep(compared to cars any way)) I never where a helmet (it makes my head heavy(so if I fall(which hasn't happened without the aid of ice)if I where a helmet my head would hit the ground harder(this is actually my excuse))) never use lights(because it's never dark enough to benefit me) and I cut the corner at the traffic lights to within a foot of the first cars bumper, and I race against cars. Does that mean I should be in debt and in prison by now? I've seen lots of cops but not one has ever pulled me up or anything.

The only bad thing I have done on the roads was when some silly bint pulled out right in front of me which left me with no option but to overtake her and flip her the birdy as I was passing.
    She... ummm... wasn't pleased...
Ohh and racing people off the lights. And winning.
Never been told off by the police though, they're all nice round here :P
  • Once, some stupid woman told me to "ride in the cycle lane next time" (thin pavement with no cycling sign) at the lights.

I chased her down the hill and informed her that if she wanted some reading practise she should try the highway code.

Other than that, the usual weaving in traffic, jumping off kerbs etc. Not had any trouble yet.

There have been a few suspect rulings in the courts over the use of cycle lanes and personal injury claims. A few cyclist have been stung with contributory negligence (which is basically a reduction in payout due to partial liability for failing to take care). In addition one or two have been done for obstructing traffic for failure to use cycle lanes, but I think it was obviously part of a bigger issue that resulted in the obstruction.

I think it will only be a matter of time before a legal precedent is made.

While I agree with your sentiment, you should always be careful with your own spelling when calling someone else an idiot. You're or you are.

    i agree alot
  • I've been pulled a couple of times recently.

Last summer for sprinting towards an empty (or so I thought) mini roundabout, pre jumping and then pumping the other side of said roundabout for speed :)

Shame there was a police car about 30 yards behind me, since it was actually quite a sweet move. Police weren't too angry, you've got full vision around all junctions and it was obviously clear, but they did mention that I had failed to notice them behind me and I still cycled straight over the top of a roundabout.

And, a few weeks ago, I had been riding up Ilkley Moor and went for a few pints at the top of the hill afterwards. On the way back down (which is a 2 mile, pitch black, 35mph road descent) I managed to catch up with a car (which I was very impressed with). Pity it was a police car.

Fortunately I always stick a couple of LEDs when coming back from trails at night, but I was bricking it about the 4 pints I'd just necked, followed by "chasing a police car at 35mph" as the officer put it. To be honest, they weren't bothered at all, just called us a pair of idiots and to act our age. * I don't condone drinking and cycling :)*
