The Shimano tech doc for the M475 front hub shows a cone size of 10.4mm (the rear is a more sensible 15mm). The smallest size cone spanner I have seen is 13mm. Will I be able to service the front hub?

Tech doc: http://techdocs.shimano.com/media/techd ... 647979.pdf

Also, how can I go about getting replacement ball bearings? I've Googled the part numbers but no useful results. Will it be a trip to the LBS?

M10 x 10.4 has nothing to do with the size of the spanner needed. M10 is the size of the thread on the axle and 10.4 is the legth of the cone. You need to buy a 13/14mm cone spanner, they are usually double ended and an adjustable will suffice for the locknut, it has for me over the last 20+ years. Bearing sizes are 3/16" front and 1/4" rear, quantity is mentioned in the tech doc. Look on ebay and you'll find one or two sellers knocking out stainless bearings in packs for a fiver. You might end up with an odd size left over but I've bought 3/16", 1/4" and 5/32" stainless for around £5.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • Must say that is odd.

    It does clearly say 10.4mm.

Your LBS will have the bearings in a more normal Steel Ball (3/16") 20 pcs.

Thanks folks. Been doing a bit more poking around on the web and it looks like the front cones are, as you say Redvee, 13mm (15mm rear). Just spoken to the mechanic at the bike shop and ordered up some bearings etc. Never thought to check eBay. Ah well, it's always nice to support local businesses!
