...it was me!

On my way from Rushden to St.Neots on small roads around 11ish this morning & noticed several cyclists (single & in odd pairs mostly) coming westward from swineshead. After seeing a few I guessed it might be something organised (I know there are routes that come from Bedford direction along the B660, to Rushden & back south).

I ride these country roads a lot as they are quiet, pleasant & close to me! They are a level up from single track - despite being quite remote, most of the roads have road markings so plenty of space for two way traffic. I probably would have riden it this morning if I had got up earlier but as it was I was in the car with family & dog.

Anyway, came around a bend in between melchborne & swineshead to be greeted by about 40 cyclists in a big group like it was tour de frog.

They were at least 5 or 6 riders abreast, well into my side of the road - I slammed on brakes (wasnt going particularly fast - the dog doesnt like the car much & I'm trying to eek out more mpg at the moment!). I basically had few options - ditch & large trees on my side & I have young kids in the back - didnt fancy that - and the large cycling group on my right.

Anyway, the outer cyclists managed to squeeze in & we squeezed past on the verge(wheels & tyres appear ok) so disaster averted.

BUT - the thing that REALY pi$$ed me off isseveral of the cyclists actually shouted abuse at ME!!! Cheek of it - me getting in their way while they are on MY side of the road.

I'm normally pretty placid, but these guys potentially put my kids in danger because of their stupid race. Kill yourself if you want those extra seconds, but not someone else please.

TW*Ts.

  • Indeed. So many posts on BR blaming car drivers - often justified I'm sure - but cyclists can be tossers just as much as anyone.

What club was it? Come on name and shame, there must have been riders wearing the club's kit.

But he drives an Audi so obviously it wasn't the cyclists fault?

Especially those big Audi Estate barges whose drivers think they are driving on a race track. I've been scared sh1tless a fair few times by these morons steaming up to my rear wheel slowing from an insane speed as they cannot pass due to oncoming traffic or overtaking head on on my side of the road coming straight at me forcing me to bail out onto the verge or get killed. Plus on the club ride, of the cars waiting to pass, Audi drivers invariably blow the car horn and give a one fingered salute or shout abuse as they force their way past the goup approaching a blind bend or brow of a hill. W*nkers.

Glad you avoided them - sloppy riding - I had something similar on a local hill - I'm descending and a club coming up the hill were spread all over the road - hadn't seen me until I shouted.

Just because you're on a bike it doesn't make you a good person.

Just because you are driving an Audi it doesn't make you a bad person.

I can't say the same for BMW drivers though.

No idea - I don't know the local clubs. The big group was wearing all sorts of stuff. There was a group of about 10 riders a few mins later in blue & white tho (all on their side of the road!).

I wonder if this incident is going to be mentioned on a motoring forum?

All this anti BMW stuff! The problem is that most people in the way of a BMW driver don't realise that the sign on the front of the car is an instruction

The Audi driver was probably driving slowly on this occasion as he was using his Blackberry .

Generally when we're out on club runs riding along the minor roads or lanes, cars pull over to let us past or hang back patiently. When we/they pass there is lots of waving to say thanks which is met by friendly waves from drivers ........... except that is drivers of a certain make of German cars  .
