Hi
Me and a friend are planning to do a bike ride from London to either Milan or Rome, not too sure yet but the main issue is what is the best way to get to Italy?
My friend has just bought a Specialized Allez (Mid range one) and I am about to purchase something similar. We are both pretty fit guys and will planning to do on average 100miles a day so want to finish in 2 weeks at the most.
Any advise on routes and gear? If anyone has done it before can they give some detailed advise.
We are aiming to leave in Mid September time.

Hi Wilo,
The link posted in my thread should answer most of your questions.

You'll also be pleased to hear i also did this on an Allez but I strongly advice looking at Triple chainsets! I crossed the Alps on a double, it was a grind, the smallest gear, was erm, not small with the tent & 2 bags on the back, still got me super fit. If you have a double already, I believe you can fit a bigger rear cassette to help.
It took me and my mate 17 days, the last day was a formality, 16 miles but id not want to do it in two weeks, not loaded.
I'd also suggest that September is a gamble, the weather could have seriously hindered us, we wouldn't have had the room for winter gear.

Check out http://www.pilgrimstorome.org.uk/news.html the meeting on the 2nd April has a talk on Cycling to Rome.
I too would suggest a early September late August start as the St Bernard (if that is your route is v high an snow can be a problem). I was much slower that either of you and would second the advice regarding the triple.
We followed the Via Francigena route http://groups.yahoo.com/group/via-francigena/0 -
If time is an isue than I would suggest following the Rhine to Basel than Zurich making your way over the Splugen pass. I did it in 2005, check out my site bellow (week 2).
The main point here is the Rhine it's flat and you can really do some kms.0
