Off to a conference in Barcelona tomorrow. Thinking of hiring a bike for a few hours one evening and having a look around.

Anyone know the area / tried this before? Offer tips & advice? No idea what its like, seems to be a few sites offering cycle hire & tours

  • Barcelona has a network of cycleways throughout the city as shown on this map - large file. The map also shows you the bike hire points and quiet routes in orange. If you have limited time I would just cycle along the sea front to Badalona in the east and/or cycle to the top of Montjuic in the west for the fort and views over the city and port. Maybe incorporate a visit to Guadi's Sagrada Familia (number 370 on map)

Like Madrid, Barcelona is completing a circular cycling route around the city called the Ronda Verda. This map in Catalan shows the route and breaks it down into sections, showing the postion reached to date. Click on "Situacio actual" to see the map and then on stage numbers to see photos. Click on photos to enlarge. Click on "Enrere" to go back.
The more you spend - the faster you go - the less you see.

The big boulevards can be hectic, but there are bike lanes and plenty of people cycling. The city bike rental scheme 'bicing' has been around for a while now, but you have to be a resident to use it.

If you like a bit of climbing, up to Montjuic (just south of city centre) if you have little time, or much better, to Tibidabao and the Serra de Collserola (green belt West of the city), is great, and you can do some nice loops there, even with just a couple of hours from city centre. There are a couple of nice tarmac roads up (sea level to 500 m), and a network of off-road tracks too.

I've used this hire company for MTBs in the past, pretty good: http://www.barcelonabiking.com/
