Triple > Double convert, shifting problems

I have converted my triple chainset into a double (24/34) but can't get it to shift between the two rings when there is any kind of tension on the chain. When I have it on a workstand it shifts really nicely between rings, but when riding it doesnt shift up or drop down, just clonks/rattles with the chain rubbing the mech.

It's an slx chainset, shifter and mech. I replaced the chain, cassette and chainrings all at the same time. Before this I breifly ran it as a 32/22 without any problems.

Any suggestions?

    so you have repositioned the mech and re set it all?

    Yeah, I have repositioned the mech etc... As far as i'm aware everything is done by the book. The only thing I haven't done is change the cable, but i'm not sure if that will make much difference?

    so how did you set the mech up?

    using the bottom positions or the top positions? (clicks on the shifter).
