campagnolo ergopower clamp/band - rounded torx bolt

Evening. Trying to adjust my shifters today and in my impatience I think I may have rounded off the torx head.

Have ordered a different tool with a better angle to get into it so will wait for that to arrive and try again.

Any suggestions otherwise? I have seen about sawing a line into the head so I can use a screwdriver but the bolt head is set into the shifter so there's no chance of that!

Help...... :cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:

    hmmm lbs?
If you have totally striped the head you could try something like a screw extractor.
    Something like this.

    http://uk.rs-online.com/web/search/sear ... _uk#header

You drill a hole down the original screw then the extractor taps in going the other way. The taper tightens it up then your bolt will back out.

I've used them in work a bit hit and miss but thats mostly because the head rounded due to rust. You MUST drill straight.

    Good luck.
  • You might want to try one of the T handle ones. You can get better purchase as you are pressing down with one of these.

I sympathise, I have almost done the same thing myself on at least one occasion. It's such a poorly thought-out design, you want to use a torque wrench but at the absolute minimum you need to remove the rubber hoods and also get an extender for the bit, and even then the angle is tight and the bolt is made out of cheese...

    Been there done that

The material is so soft that you just need to hammer in the next size up Torx bit; thats what I did.

For replacements you could get a full original band clamp form Campag (£20ish and a 6week wait) or use rear brake bolts. Geoff at Mercian Cycles sorted me out with this tip and supplied bolts, of a harder alloy, in torx and hex fittings.

  • Thanks for the caliper brake bolt tip, worked a charm. Not having a Torx bit of suitable size to hammer in, I simply used progressively larger drill bits to machine off the rounded bolt head, leaving only the sleeve to slip through the body of the lever. Job done, only I did unwittingly shorten the male-threaded square-headed bolt that mates to the band. Oh well, there must be a square-headed bolt in the cupboard somewhere.

Which rear brake bolts are you referring to? Crazy, sh*ty design those Campag lever clamps
    Pegoretti
    Colnago
    Cervelo
    Campagnolo
  • We're referring to those standard short recessed nuts (not bolts, sorry), the sort used to fit rear caliper brakes. In fact, the bolt itself (the one with the square head that goes inside the band) is soft aluminium alloy as well. Darwin Award -calibre madness. All sorts of grief spring to mind in case of bolt or thread failure: sudden loss of balance coupled with a locked brake as the lever body slips down, pulling hard on the brake cable. Next thing you know you're under a lorry. All for the sake of a couple of grammes.

I ended up cannibalising a Dura-Ace 7800-series brifter for the (proper steel) square-headed bolt. Does anybody know where I can order just the bolt and not the entire "STI band clamp unit"?

If I had another pair of Ergopowers I'd replace the bolts and nuts with steel ones as a precautionary measure even if the bolt heads weren't rounded yet.
  • Hi guys,i have done the same with my campagnolo ergo shifter clamp nuts as the op,the rear caliper idea sounds great, what lenght are those nuts?
