the female bolt housings for my bottle cage have had it. When i tried to undo the bolts, the bolts turn but so do the female housings, they just spin in the frame.

can they be fixed / removed?

cheers

    yes.

can you explain a little more on how to remove the housings?
  • They are just pop rivets. Drill out old ones, remove bb, collect old rivets, Get a pop rivet tool (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Pro-Two-Way-Swive ... 3a6273c96c) and some M5 Rivets (5mm), (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/M5-Steel-Rivet-Nu ... 230e0ff155) Install new Rivets in boss holes. That is assuming you have an alu frame that uses pop rivets.
  • right so thats what they look like, so im gessing the splined bits have either rounded or widened the hole in the frame.

I doubt they could be drilled out, ive drilled many propper pop rivits out of racking frames, doors etc in the past and im certain this would damage the frame.
  • Ive Drilled out pop rivets loads of times, at work lol... U need to use a drill the same about .1 or .2 mm smaller the OD of the rivet.
The rivets are pressed in and compressed.
If your worried about frame damage, seek waranty.
  • If you manage to get the bolt out ok and the Riv-nut is still in the frame then instead of drilling it out and replacing it, just tighten it up, you'll need the same tool as you would for fitting a new one, any decent LBS shoud have an M5 Riv-nut tool. Loads easier than drilling out and replacing it.

If its cross threaded though, better off replacing...
  • Best bet is to just hit the LBS up. If you're not comfortable doing the work yourself as you feel you may damage the frame, leave it to someone who knows how to do it, and then it is their fault if they damage something.

yeah im kinda getting this feeling, the nearest one is 50 mile away though lol

ok so now you want to know ways on how to get them out?

what has happened is just like a pop rivet the pressure between the two "crimps" has failed

the inserts are called Rivnuts. so what you need to do is to reapply the force to the outer flange.

    not easy but possible.

but as with many things it depends on what state things are now and what you can lose.

an other option is cut off the bottle cage and then the bolt and then remove the outer flange and tap the nut into the tube. then fish out via the BB.

many sheet metal workers will have a Rivnut setter and some rivnuts.

they are also known by a couple of other names

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rivet_nut

if you want advice as what to do in you case post pics and you will get ideas/options.
