10 cogs

Why is it that 10spd cassettes are cheaper than their now out dated 9 spd counterparts?

I know it's only a £ but still cheaper on Merlin. I was expecting 9 speed stuff to get cheaper.

Do you think it's because people arn't taking the plunge as you need new shifters and mechs too? As it's not as people hoped - that they would just be able to upgrade their rear shifters and get a 10 speed chai and cassette when they needed replacing?

Shimano have made the change a lot more expensive than the 8 to 9 speed shift of a decade ago.

    9 speed isn't outdated yet.
  • Yes, but if you were getting a whole new bike - you'd get 10 spd over 9 any day (plus do new model SLX+ speced bikes come with 9spd?)

It's the people with 9 moving to 10 that I don't think has happened as quickly as when it was 8 to 9 simply becuase of the cost and very little benefit of an extra cog and the pull ratio.

8 speed isn't outdated for some
Admittedly the component choice is now somewhat limited.

Ditto 3 speed hubs and even (gasps)..single speed.

No, actually. I'll stick with 9 for now, thank you very much.
  • Think you missed my point. Yes, me included, sticking to 9 spd as I am happy with my mech and shifters but if I walked in a shop and bought a whole new bike it would be 10spd.

Like I said, if I was buying a whole new bike, I'd still opt for 9 speed right now.
Just cause you want to be a cutting-edge fashion tart doesn't mean everyone else does.
The latest SLX and XT groupset are also available as 9 speed.

On a new bike I'd go 9-speed too, for cheaper and easier replacment parts and for compatability with all my other bikes.

The reason 10-speed is sometimes cheaper than 9 just now is that SRAM and Shimano have set lower prices for 10-speed to increase the pickup rate. That's also why it's turning up on so many new bikes even at budget rates.
