Hi guys
My first post 8)
I have recently bought myself an 02 Trek 1000 similar to the below:
http://www.bikepedia.com/quickbike/Bike ... &Type=bike
My wheels are quite badly worn around the rims and have a quite bad groove all the way around where the brakes touch the rims. So i thought i might invest in some 'budget' wheels, i am thinking something like:

My question is, on my bike do i need to worry about modern wheels fitting my frame? this may sound a silly question but somoene told me i may need to use spacers which sounded a bit dodgy. i am hoping to retain my current cassette and upgrade to a maybe a 9sp one when i can afford new shifters too.
Thanks in advance.
Andy

I am no expert on older Trek bikes but I would be surprised if you need to use spacers.
Standard geared wheel widths have been around for some time now and they are 100mm for front and 130mm for rear (try measuring yours). Mountain bike wheels have a slightly wider hub at 135mm.
To measure you will need to drop the wheel out and measure between the stays.
The Fulcrum wheels look okay for a budget set but imho these http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/Bike+Shop ... O-R500.htm
these are similar quality but £30 cheaper but only if you are buying from Merlin, everywhere else they are comparable on price too.
I use the R500's for my commuter and they are totally bombproof, trust me riding in the dark all the time seems to find every pothole that has ever existed and the R500's just keep going.0 -
If the rims have a groove all the way round it's probably a wear indicatorAlex0

Thanks guys,i'll have a measure of my frame and double check.
Alex, the groove looks like where the brake blocks have worn the rim away, there's a lip around the rim where the blocks would rub when you apply the brakes.

You have a bike with 8speed Sora gearing.
Any wheels which are Shimano 8/9/10speed will fit.
What you need to be careful of is wheels which are Shimano 10sp only, as they have a different hub and your cassette won't fit on it.
The Fulcrums and shimano WH-R500's at Merlin are being sold as 8/9/10sp so will both be fine.
As for spacers, someone using 10sp would need a spacer to use the 8/910sp wheels, but you're fine !0 -
the same wheelset for £80 only campag in stock at the moment but keep an eye out for shimano.

Sadly the Planet X Fulcrums only take 10 speed cassettes.0
