Hi, I need a tough singlespeed (hybrid or maybe MTB-ish framed) bike with a freewheel - the type that won't feck you over the handlebars if you stop pedalling. In Bikes & Gear there is no sub-section for these. Any names of manufacturers/models to look at? Needs to be small as I'm a short@rse. Most importantly, needs to be cheap so 2nd hand is fine. Any websites to look at? All advice welcome. Oh - I'm in Ireland. Thanks very much. G.

  • have a look on ebay for a cheap second hand mtb with old style dropouts that allow you to set wheel tension a single speed conversion kit from superstar components for the freehub and a rear gear.

You may need to put a different crankset on it to enable you to use a single chainring.

Mines an old raliegh cost about £100 to buy and convert
  • That's a good start - thanks very much. G.

You can fit a freewheel to any fixed bike. Specialized Tricross Single might be worth considering. They come up from time to time in the classifieds - you should be able to get a good one for £200 - £250.

Or maybe on On One Pompino or singlespeed Inbred
    More problems but still living....
  • Thanks amaferanga. Hoping to spend a lot less than that but we'll see how it goes. G.
