Name that rack

My commuting bike is black with shiny polished aluminium bits. The rear pannier rack was once shiny aluminium, but that was in the late 80s and is beginning to look a bit sad now. I saw a matt black “stealth” rack on another bike yesterday, which would help to reduce the radar profile of my bike, as well as looking better. I couldn’t see a name on it and a trawl of the usual online retailers hasn’t helped, so I was hoping someone on here could help. Apart from the matt blackness of it, I liked the fact that the sides were not vertical, but angled up to a much narrower top. Definitely only for hung panniers, as the top was only ca. 5cm wide and you wouldn’t be able to attach much directly on top of it. The nearest I could find online was some of the Tubus racks, but none looked as narrow at the top.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

  • Could it be the Tortec Velocity? That's available in black.

Polish the old rack. Modern racks have crappy paintjobs (black or aluminium colour) which will scratch up straight away. An unpainted alloy rack just wants ten minutes with some t-cut/metal polish and a rag. And any scratches will just polish out with a bit of wet and dry. I did this with the 20 year old rack on my Dawes and it came up like new. I'd have had to repaint a modern one.

Thanks, could well have been a Tortec Velocity. Whilst the current rack is perfectly functional and could be cleaned up, it gives the bike the look of a 1970s Volvo, something that Jerry from the Good Life would have driven. It could be time for a change.

I thought I'd accidentally posted in Cake Stop, the home of (un)intended innuendo.
