Shimano 2300 quick release brakes

Since putting my front brake and wheel on my bike (the rear was set up at the shop I bought it from), I've noticed that the back is in the 'closed' position whereas the front, if I push it down into the same position, is rubbing on the front wheel

is this a problem?

Both brake handles seem to have the same amount of travel even though the quick release is in a different position on each one...and I stop alright!

Sounds like the cable needs releasing a little on the front brake, it won't cause any problems, the only time it may is when trying to remove the wheel, as the idea of the quick release lever is to move the brake blocks out the way so they don't foul on the tyre when you try to remove the wheel
  • hmmm....I manage to just squeeze the tyre between the blocks as is

    probably a no-no

Not really a problem if you can get the wheel out OK. In fact my dad always tells me to adjust the brakes so that they are in the open position so that as they wear you can simply close the release lever a little rather than readjusting them

  • that's a good shout, actually

Don't use the QR cam to compensate for brake block wear; that's not what they are designed to do.

Set the brakes up so the blocks are the required distance from the rim with the QR in the closed position. Use the barrel adjusters for fine tuning as the blocks wear.
  • any handy tips for a complete newbie attempting this tonight?

Have a browse of the Park Tools website; should be step by step instructions there.

Failing that, search on YouTube and you'll find loads of videos of people doing it.

It really is a very simple adjustment.
  • Thanks!
