Just changed my car to an 05 plate Clio and need a rack to lug a couple of Hardtails.

Any suggestions?

thule website. but do shop around
    - Thule Rapid System 754 £70
    - Thule Aero Bar 860 alloy £75 or square type bars for around £35 but they are steal
    - fitting Kit 1119 £30

then you need couple bike racks to go on the roofrack.
    myself i have 2 Thule FreeRide 530.

    http://www.lexs.co.uk £32.75 each.

Saris Bones. Far cheaper than roof racks, and does a standup job.

I wouldn't touch another rear rack ever after my last one, it was a Thule rack and although it probably was fairly sturdy it sure didnt look it when you're driving along everytime you go round a corner... eeek moments. That and the fact it does leave marks on the paintwork despite the rubber feet.

Roof racks are definitely worth the money in my eyes, especially when you see other drivers with the same racks - Thule 591s travelling at naughty speeds and the bikes dont move an inch.

roof rack are alot better no matter how carefull you are with the boot mounted carriers, you will scratch your paint work at one time taking it on and off, fit a decent roofrack cycle carrier and forget about it.

70-75mph mine solid as a rock.

I've never gone faster than 70mph (ahem, obviously), but if I HAD, let's say, done 105mph, ten I do know the saris is stable.
Just don't ask how I know.

Erm, it was a mate of mine that did it. Yeah, that's right.
  • Thanks all, i have been looking at the Saris Bones and will probably go for that as i would prefer not to have to invest in roof bars etc as i won't use it often enough to justify the extra dosh. I have had a rear mounted carrier before without marking my old motor and i have read good things about the saris models.

  • I've got the saris bones RS (with the steel straps) on a 3 door Clio.

I only use it for the long trips (>100's of miles journeys) to events over motorways and twisting country lanes. Aside from using a few ocky straps to hold wheels still, it did the job perfectly. The RS version also allows you to lock the straps meaning you can leave the rack on the car in public with less fear that it'll get nicked.

The only concern is that you don't over tighten the straps. You dont want to put too much tension on the top strip of the rear hatch. I passed someone on the motorway once, where their boot rack had pulled the top strip of the rear hatch off, depositing the rack and bikes on the road (but that wasn't a Clio )

I changed our family car recently and didn't want to go for a tale gate mounted rack. I used to have one from argos, but I never really felt comfy driving long distance ans the straps where forever coming unhooked.

I've gone for the 591 pro-ride (4 of them). I would have preferred a hook mounted system, but getting the hook fitted properly and the rack was the best part of grand.

I'll be probably flogging one of the 591s on ebay, it just worked out cheaper to buy 4 and then sell one.

But I would say, if your car is worth money its not worth scrimping only do do 500 quids worth of damage to it.
  • i got one of these from halfords for £90, its now 99 but i think its worth it -

I know its from halfords but it raises the bikes above the lights / reg, its really easy to get on and off, its bloody stable and i can even open my boot with it on, albeit without the bikes. you do have to be careful to avoid scratching your paintwork mind, but my paint is still fine despite slamming my boot shut with it on cause its a company car!
